My Favorite Things

February 1st, 2017

I want to share some items I love that make it easier for me to get ready and look my best.

  1. Osis+ by Schwarzkopf, which creates lots of volume throughout the day. It’s a sprinkle-in dust that gives a boost to your hair.   A little goes a long way. Through the day you can give your hair oomph by mussing up your roots with your fingers.
  1. Sally Hansen Airbrush self-tanner. I’m outside a lot either exercising or doing errands. I don’t suntan on my own but my upper body tans just from being outside and my legs stay white. This inexpensive self-tanner comes in different colors and doesn’t turn orange. I don’t have to wear panty hose and my legs look even colored compared with my upper body. No streaks. This lightweight leg makeup covers veins and imperfections, plus its water and transfer resistant.
  1. Make-up blender sponge. Professionals use it to contour and highlight your makeup without leaving stripes. It also does a great job of blending concealer. The first time I applied makeup with the sponge my daughter saw me   and asked what I’d done differently with my makeup, as it appeared more even. My daughters got eagle eyes! So when I got a compliment from my daughter I KNEW it worked.
  1. This is great for a quick trip out the door with minimal makeup and an instant facelift. Use a fan brush to apply the bronzer.
  2. Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick. It evens out your skin tone and gives your skin a natural look. I love how it moisturizes and softens wrinkles too. Plus it saves room in your suitcase if you’re a traveller!

What a Deal! $118.00 necklace for $22.00…How’d I do it?

January 24th, 2017

I recently grabbed a bargain: a necklace originally priced at $118.00 for $20.00 I found at Anthropologie. How? I found a dress and discovered this necklace on a mannequin. So I grabbed it as it complimented my dress PERFECTLY.

Then I noticed that the necklace was missing the center stone. Argh!

I asked the salesperson if they could find another one either in the backroom or online. No necklace was to be found.   So my light bulb turned on & I asked the Manager if I could purchase this one without the stone for a discounted price. She said “sure how does $20.00 sound”? (I could still return it if I couldn’t find a stone to fit, too).

So I purchased it and headed to “Bead It,” one of my favorite accessory stores in Austin on South Congress Avenue.   I showed the gal behind the counter and immediately she pulled out some single beads that fit and complimented the other stones. She rang it up and it cost me a total of $2.00 to have the necklace looking like new.

Always be on the look out for different options and be willing to ask for the best deal. It does pay off.

Jump into Life

January 4th, 2017

When I was 17 years old I taught swim lessons to young children. While I’m with my current clients, I educate them similar to how I taught swim class.   The children were afraid to jump in (even though I was hired to offer them swim lessons). I built trust with the swimmers and let them have fun. Once we had trust established, they flourished and learned.

When my clients hire me they want to feel safe and assured that I will update their look. However, I do have clients who test the waters by just putting their toes in. They say they want to swim but it’s easier said than done and can talk themselves out of it. I would love all my clients to jump in and begin swimming immediately.

Don’t overthink it. Jump in, feel the splash and trust me. You will then experience the freedom to go any direction with a person who has your back and believes in you.

BeeBop & Wally, NYC

I immediately fell in love with this darling green & fuchsia polka dot print jacket at the Austin, Texas Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. My eyes were especially zoned into the asymmetrical style. I’m always receiving compliments from people regarding its uniqueness. It’s cozy and how many cozy outfits are actually shapely & comfortable? Besides, it’s fun and sassy!

BeeBop & Wally is located in New York City. They have no mortar-brick building; they only sell on-line and at shows. Their clothing has the retro flair and is very true to size.   I love different…because I am different.  BeeBop & Wally

Time to Refit your Bra

November 9th, 2016

One question I always ask my women clientele is “when was the last time you were fitted for a bra”? Their answers are all over the board. Believe me this is one of my least favorite things to do in life and the experts say to do it yearly. You can buy a cheap bra anywhere but the idea is to be properly fitted by a professional bra fitter so your back doesn’t hurt, the bra straps aren’t digging into your body and everything is put into it’s proper place. You may think it’s not important but compare the before and after in the picture. Being fitted by an expert can make you feel 10 times more comfortable, stand straighter, look taller and more slender and make your clothes look great on you. There are great places to fitted by an expert.   Contact and schedule a fitting with any of the expert fitters in Austin.

Guy’s…..Tie One On in Tokyo, Japan

Necktie of Mt. Fuji in Japan

My husband Salvatore & I recently visited Japan and we wanted to bring back something memorable.

We ran across Taya, a men’s clothing store in the Ginza area of Tokyo selling beautiful 100% silk jacquard neckties. The ties are designed and produced in Yonezawa,Yamagata, Japan. My husband purchased a “Mt. Fuji” necktie with subtle colors (pictured) so it can go with a multitude of different colored shirts and suits.

According to their business card, “Taya was founded in 1905 as a store importing

Western-goods and clothing at the time when “kimono” was a dominant fashion in Japan.”  The original necktie brand have been supported by more than three generations of visitors.

If you’re visiting Japan or if you are here in the states, check out their website for a beautiful gift for yourself or someone else.

Button Up Men & Women

May 6th, 2015

Whether it be reassessing your current wardrobe or shopping for a new wardrobe you may not be able to put your finger on why you are not completely drawn to an outfit.

One reason may be as simple as replacing the buttons on the article of clothing.  It may seem insignificant but it can make a huge difference that can make an outfit rise to the occasion.

How can you accomplish this feat if you’re unable to envision the all-over look or sewing is not your “thing”?

Give me a call and I can give you a recommendation or even head to the fabric store and select buttons specific to the look you are going for and apply the buttons for you.

2015 Color of the Year

February 11th, 2015

Pantone the company used in printing and manufacturing is known for its color complimenting technique chooses a top color each year to be used in fashion, beauty or home décor. This year the color is MARSALA   like the Italian red wine.  What color is Marsala you ask?  It’s a deep red-brown hue.  You can add a dash of color wherever you feel appropriate; rather than dressing head-to-toe on your hair, lipstick, blush and eye color.  Then you would STICK OUT in a crowd.  A dash makes more of a statement that can go a long way.

Guys you can add a necktie or pocket scarf with Marsala or if you’re feeling really confident go with a Marsala shirt and/or socks in this color.    “Less is more” which too is my motto.

If you’re not into this color on your body add a pillow or towel with this color in your home. Let the color speak to you rather than let anyone tell you that is what you have to wear.  You don’t have to like it or wear it because people tell you it’s in this season, wear it because you feel good in this color.

Mother-of-the-Bride Dress

January 7th, 2015

My daughter Kira got married in November of 2014 (you may have seen my blog about her vintage dress).   I’ve shopped with mothers’ and for myself for Mother-of-the-bride/groom dresses.   I realize some brides want the mother of the groom and mother of the bride to be dressed to the brides desires.  This can be a rather difficult situation as the bride may have one thought and the mothers’ are uncomfortable dressing as the bride prefers.  I was lucky, my daughter was relaxed about what we mothers’ wore and left it up to us.  However, when choosing a dress I did take into consideration the following:

A. I didn’t want to upstage the bride or “stick out”,  rather be a compliment to the wedding party.

B. I chose to dress with a specific detail from my daughters dress, again not to stand out rather to dress in the style of the wedding yet with the elegance she wanted to express for her theme.

C. I wanted to dress comfortably and express who I am.

D. Last but not least I was NOT going to dress like so-called mothers-of-the brides dressed from years ago, who doesn’t recall the dreaded long dress with a sparkly jacket!

My daughter had lace, therefore I wore a subtle lace dress.  Her dress was off-white so of course no off-white or whites which would’ve made me be equal color-wise to my daughter.  It was her day to shine, not mine.  Black for my dress seemed  dreary and had I worn a navy dress I would’ve matched the bridal party.  Therefore I chose a deep raspberry color since Kira had raspberry colors in her bouquet.  I wore vintage earrings and a vintage bracelet from my mother-in-law to bring in the era of Kira’s vintage wedding dress.

Voila!   I felt I complimented the wedding party with my own personal style rather than stood out as I look back at the pictures taken.  If your son or daughter are getting married my suggestion is to understand the theme of the wedding.  Is it tremendously fancy?  What type of venue will the wedding and reception be held?  What style of dress is the bride wearing?  What colors are the bridal party wearing?   Those are a few of the questions I would ask of you when shopping for a dress for your child’s wedding.
