Little Changes Men Can Do

June 26th, 2013

Guys I did not forget about you!  Last week I blogged mistakes women make which cause them to appear older than they really are or want to appear.  Below are some examples that scream “old man” and simple answers to create a more updated look.

Pleated front and/or wrong waste-line pant.  Wear a flat-front pant even if you have larger thighs as pleated can make you look shorter, wider, and dated.  Wearing pants over the belly button or under the “belly” is just plain wrong.  Always wear pants at your natural waist, no matter how wide the waist.

Comb-Over Hairstyles or Toupee may make you think you’re hiding your bald spot but others definitely know, I can assure you.  Shave your head and it will definitely update your look.  If you can grow a well, filled-in beard, grow that instead.

Over-grown hair in the ears, nose or on the eyebrows are not only unkempt but also scream old.  People want to feel you care about how you look rather than concentrate on overgrown hairs.  Either invest in a hair trimmer for $20.00 or have your hairstylist take care of the extra long hairs.

Eye Glasses definitely say more about your style than you realize.  When you shop for new frames ask the question “what image do the glasses give me…. young, old, etc” rather than “do these glasses look good”?  More than likely if you ask “what image do the glasses give me” people will be more open to say old, distinguished, sporty whereas asking “do these glasses look good” most people will generally say yes.  (Hint:  If you shop for glasses with me I’ll give my honest opinion.)

Rubber Soled or Square-Toed Shoes just look dated and is especially noticeable when you wear it with an updated outfit.  I understand bad feet as my husband and I both have them and the need to wear comfortable shoes.  Don’t spoil your look.  The right shoes may be more expensive but it is possible to find a comfortable, great looking pair of shoes.

Little Changes Women Can Make

June 19th, 2013

Changing up your style through fashion and beauty from season-to-season can be challenging.  Women can make a few mistakes that make them  appear older  than they really are or want to.  Below are some ways that can make a woman look older and the answer to create a more youthful look.

Dark lipstick makes lips appear smaller.  A brighter color and/or a hint of gloss will make lips seem fuller and and give a more youthful look.

Overly sleek hairstyles can make the face look drawn and emphasize every pore, wrinkle, and imperfection. A textured, looser option or a loosely pulled-back style can take at least five years off your face and de-emphasize those imperfections.  Keep in mind that helmet-headed styles can be aging.  Steer clear of overly voluminous bouffants.

Over-concealing dark circles to hide bags and under eye circles is beyond noticeable.  Use a light concealer, applied with a brush only to the dark spots–not the entire under eye.

Cakey foundation – Heavy foundation emphasizes wrinkles.  Choose a tinted moisturizer instead. Once applied, dab a damp sponge to noticeably wrinkled areas where foundation has settled. It will remove any excess foundation!  BB or CC Cream can help hide facial discolorations (I wouldn’t be without it), plus it has a sunscreen.  Prices vary  from $7.00 on up.

Lower lash mascara brings attention to crows feet and makes eyes appear smaller and tired. Instead curl the top lashes and apply the blackest mascara you can find–it will bring out the whites of the eyes and make them look bigger.

Short necklaces bring attention to your neck–an area that begins to show aging early on. Wear a long necklace which elongates your neck and your figure for an all-around slimming effect.

Guys……Style Tips that are always Fashionable

June 12th, 2013

So men, how can you look your best?   Let’s face it, if you walk into a room you are being judged on your look.  Women are fortunate to have a huge variety in their wardrobe while men are usually offered a minimal amount of options from season to season.  Below are some simple style principles that will keep you looking great and never go out of style.

1. Cut

Make sure the clothes you wear are not wearing you.  The right fit for you may be different than the right fit for another.  More importantly, wear your style rather than someone else’s.  Find a tailor that makes the clothes fit to your body shape, which will make you look as if the clothes were made for you.  Just because one brand fits one guy doesn’t mean it will fit you the same.

2.  Color

Many men feel that a tan colored pant and shirt can be a safe choice.  However, tan can work for some while it can wash other men out due to their skin tone or hair color.  Taupe may be a better choice.

3. Fashion

Don’t build your wardrobe based on the latest trend being pushed by a store or fashion magazines.  Fashion is not about the latest fad but rather finding a way to emphasize your body shape and have more than one look from work to social to special occasions to match your style.  The look also needs to be age appropriate.  Also adding clothes to your wardrobe so they can be interchangeable.  Simply adding a pocket scarf with your favorite suit or sports jacket can give your look much more flair.

4. Quality over Quantity

Target store prices may look best for your checkbook so you can save for the great pair of expensive golf clubs you want to purchase.  However, if you calculate how many times you wash and wear a shirt and then have to buy 2 or 3 in the same year to continue to look good, it actually can be more expensive.   Quality clothing will look great through all the wear and washings for a longer period.

5. Shoes

The first thing others notice are the shoes you wear.  They are the best indication of your style and the strongest signal on how conscious you are about your presentation.  A cheap pair of shoes paired with an expensive outfit is the clearest giveaway that you look cheap and less impressive.  If you can’t afford a decent pair, wait for a sale rather than opting for a cheaper pair.  For example, if you spend the regular price of $60.00 on a pair of shoes that you wear day in and day out, you a may have to purchase them again during the year.  You could be spending much less by buying a comfortable, well-made shoe that can have resoled for a few years.

Looking your best signals to others that you care about yourself and that you have a high regard for yourself.
